Breaking up with your belongings
Moving abroad has its own pluses and minuses. I'd say decluttering your house/apartment/room is one of the greatest things you can do before you move out. Getting rid of the belongings you don't use/wear/etc, so it won't take up the space that you will really need (movings costs are pretty high, unfortunately). You will feel lighter and you start your new life in a new country/house/city freshly.
I categorised my belongings into few different groups.
1. Belongings that are of value but you don't use it anymore. For me it's my old macbook, guitar, college books, another simple gadgets. Put it on sale online. I think it's a great solution: less stuff to pack and more money in your pocket.
2. Things of sentimental value. They will move abroad with me (but not my bed. It's way too big. But I love my bed...).
3. Clothing. Few months before I move I will be reorganising my wardrobe. There are a lot of clothing in my wardrobe (well, at least for me. I'm not really a clothes person). I haven't wore about 1/4 of them in years. Some of them will be given to charity. Others will be thrown away.
4. Use it up before you move things. If you're a bit addicted to cosmetics (like me) - use it up before you move (I have a habit to start a new foundation without fully finishing the old one and I have about 5 bottles of body lotion. I know, guilty). Especially those products that are nearly finished and you kind of got bored of it. I know if I won't finish it I will be taking a lot of half empty or even quarter full bottles of perfume, cosmetics, skincare etc. There's definitely no need for that. Better buy that one lotion just before you move out than taking up space in a box with a lot of half empty plastic bottles. You will definitely feel good throwing away completely used up products (I do).

5. Throw it away and don't look back belongings. They have been lying around for decades. You don't know why, but you still have them. They do not have any sentimental value to you, but they're still here.
These are the 5 main categories for me. I'm not taking furniture with me (as it would be more expensive to have it shipped than to buy new furniture) and still I hope to have at least 1/4 less belongings in my possession by July (when I move) than do I now. We'll see about that, but my start is pretty good.
